Born and raised in Massachusetts, Karen Janszen holds a MA in screenwriting from the American Film Institute as well as a BA from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a MA from Harvard, both in anthropology. She started out writing the independent film Digging to China, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 1998. She co-wrote the feature The Matchmaker and The Original Wives Club, an episode for HBOs From the Earth to the Moon. The family adventure film Free Willy 2 was her first screenwriting credit. Janszen recently completed two original screenplays, Weightless and Act Normal, and worked on several studio assignments including The Storyteller, for Miramax, The Wild, for Beacon, and The Generals Woman, for Paramount.

Janszen began her career as a science journalist, a documentary film writer and a developer of new childrens and science television series for public television. In 2001 Janszen was named by Variety as one of Ten Screenwriters to Watch.
