A self-described "Brooklyn hip-hop kid," Aronofsky was born in the borough on February 12, 1969. He has often been referred to as an extremely confident, almost arrogant, but intelligent, filmmaker. His feature directorial and screenwriting debut happend in 1998 with "Pi". The bizarre yet brilliant film garnered Aronofsky the 1998 Sundance Festival's Directing Award for Dramatic Competition. But it was in 2000, with his best film and masterpiece, "Requiem for a Dream", that the writer-director ascended to the level of an auteur.
