Carl Gottlieb was a comedian (He was a member of the San Francisco-based improv troupe "The Committee") before becoming a writer/director. After attending Syracuse University, Gottlieb went on to write for the TV show "Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" in 1967, winning an Emmy. He went on to direct the 1968 TV variety series "Music Scene". He also played Ugly John in the original film version of M*A*S*H (1969). In 1975, he won a Golden Globe for his script work on Spielberg's "Jaws" (1975) and also had a cameo in the film. Interesting side note: he also wrote an entertaining chronicle on the production called, "The Jaws Log." His writing career appears to be at end, with his only recent credit being for acting, Clueless (1995).
