How I Got An Agent

Despite what the title of this post might indicate, I'm not overly self-absorbed. I would have labeled this article, "How To Get An Agent," but the fact of the matter is no two people go about securing representation in the exact same manner. The approach, connections, timing, and sometimes blind luck of it is always different. Hence, the egotism.
My journey to representation began in January 2008. I had been out of school for about a year and had just embarked upon a a post-Apocalyptic spec. The first draft came to me quickly, as did the realization that I would need subsequent drafts. Luckily, my writers group (dubbed The Screenwriters League) was willing to work with me on ironing out the next few drafts. By August, I was confident that I had my most industry-ready script to date. It was time, at last, to begin the process of sending our query letters.
The temptation is to secure an agent right of the bat. I opted to fight this, and suggest you consider doing the same. Rather, I went for a manager.
