Hollywood Script Deals - January, 2010

Sony Pictures snagged the movie rights to a series of sci-fi novels by Jeff Somers, tapping Trevor Sands to adapt the first book, titled "The Electric Church." Somers has so far written three books, all set in a near future where Earth is run by a federation of nations and governed by a council. Avery Cates, the hero, is a bodyguard-assassin who, in "Church," is forced by the governing police force to kill the founder of a church that converts people by transplanting their brains into pliant robotic bodies. Sands recently adapted the science fiction book series "Hyperion" for Warner Bros.

The Film Department will develop "True Memoirs of an International Assassin," an action-comedy spec written by Jeff Morris. "Memoirs" focuses on an accountant who writes a novel about the life he wishes he had, that of a fearless assassin. He sells the book, the publisher labels it a memoir, and the world comes to believe he is his alter ego. When he goes on vacation to Belize, he finds himself coerced into killing the country's prime minister and must now become the hero he's always written about but never dreamed he'd be.

Christopher Kyle will adapt Jon Land's best-seller "The Seven Sins: The Tyrant Ascending" for the big screen. The action thriller centers on Michael "The Tyrant" Tiranno, adopted son of an Italian crime lord called upon to defend the gambling mecca from terrorist attacks. Kyle is a New York-based screenwriter and playwright whose work includes "K-19: The Widowmaker," "Alexander" and "The Monogamist."
