August 18th, 2004
Frank Pierson, 79, has presided over the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences for three one-year terms since 2001. He'll now get a fourth and final term. According to academy bylaws, no officer can serve more than four consecutive terms in one office. The screenwriter whose credits include Dog Day Afternoon, Cat Ballou and Cool Hand Luke, was re-elected this past week as president of the Academy Awards organization.
Actress Kathy Bates, an Oscar-winner for Misery, was re-elected as academy treasurer.
