Script Report: AZTEC
May 28th, 2004
Montecito Picture Corporation, with a first-look deal in place at DreamWorks, has picked up a pitch called AZTEC. The story centers on a slave, Tez, in 1519 at the height Aztec empire in South America. Tez is a participant in a deadly game called Ullamalitzli, where players have to hit a rubber ball through a stone hoop many feet off the ground -- and not use their hands or let the ball touch the ground at any time. The winners of Ullamalitzli were lauded with gifts and the love of the crowd. The losers were put to death. In the AZTEC story winning means Tez gets to live, but he also has a plan to escape the city of Tenochtitlan and make off with a treasure's worth of gold.
The story pitch was delivered by screenwriters Jeff Schaffer (a co-writer on THE CAT IN THE HAT) and Ted Humphrey (a former staff writer on NOW AND AGAIN). The duo will now begin to write the script.
