THE HAUNTING Screenwriter Passes

Nelson Gidding died May 2 at a hospital in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 84 and lived in Los Angeles. Gidding was born in New York and educated at Phillips Exeter Academy and Harvard. He served in WWII, was captured and became a POW. While in captivity he began writing the only novel he would ever publish, “End Over End.” He served in the Army Air Forces flying as the navigator on a B-26 when he was shot down over Germany and taken prisoner. He managed to escaped and in 1946 published his novel. He Later found work in television writing for such shows as “Suspense,” “Sergeant Preston of the Yukon, “ and others. As a Hollywood screenwriter Gidding worked on such classic films as the Susan Hayward prison drama “I Want to Live!” (which received an Oscar nomination) and “The Haunting”(1963). His other credits include: The “Andromeda Strain” (1971), “The Hindenbur” (1975), “Odds Against Tomorrow” (1959), “Lisa” (1962) and “Nine Hours to Rama” (1963).
