Malick Shelves CHE For Now, Instead Takes on THE NEW WORLD
May 12th, 2004
Terence Malick has been forced to shelved "Che", his Cuban revolutionary biopic, to make "The New World", which centers on Pocahontas and the collision of European culture and Indian tribes.
Malick has gone as lone as 20 years between movies (he’s directed 3) claims he will return to "Che" next year, and that the film, which will shoot in Bolivia, can use the extra pre-production time. It’s unclear whether his cast, which includes Benicio Del Toro as Che, will be available at that time.
Malick penned both movies and was trying to decide between them the last few months. Apparently a couple of factors made "The New World" the choice: Colin Farrell signed on, and New Line committed $30 million to the project. [Source: CHUD]
