Butler's Script Sale of the Week...

Well, we cruise into the holiday break with a few gems from the script sales department. I'll be looking out for SHOPGIRL simply because it's Steve Martin. Ditto AN AMERICAN GIRL IN LONDON as I'm interested in anything the wonderful Kate Hudson does at this point in her career. The news that Berkeley Breathed is turning his BLOOM COUNTY into a feature was a great X-mas gift. He's one of the all time great cartoonists as far as I'm concerned, along with Gary Larson ("The Far Side") and Bill Watterson ("Calvin and Hobbes"). The funny papers aren't the same without them.

My pick this week is the Howard Hughes project that Castle Rock is developing.

It's my pick not because Jim Carrey will stepping into the shoes of Hughes in yet another bid to bag his elusive Oscar, but because the man hired to adapt and direct the Hughes biography is MEMENTO (2001) scribe/director Christopher Nolan.

Nolan will attempt to mold HUGHES: THE PRIVATE DIARIES, LETTERS AND MEMOS by Richard Hack into a cohesive feature film.

Best man for the job as far as I'm concerned. If Nolan can tell a movie backwards and have it make narrative and thematic sense, then I've no doubt that he'll be able to take a book of letters and memos and craft it into something memorable.

I'm sure he'll deliver a script that will provide a nice juicy role for Carrey to chew on. In fact if he's not careful, Jim might find his screenwriter/director making the Oscar speech he's dying to deliver.

Nolan's a true talent and Carrey is a gifted actor. This just might be theproject that puts both of them over the top. In the meantime, I'll be waiting for Nolan's INSOMNIA (2002) to keep me happy.

Happy Holidays to one and all. May the New Year bring you everything you want and deserve! Keep on writing ...
