'Mulholland'/Lynch Win Again
December 17th, 2001

We're starting to sound redundant here, but...
MULHOLLAND picked up another Best Picture award (this time from the Boston Society of Film Critics). Lynch also nabbed the Best Director award. This movie is just CHARGING ahead. Is an Oscar far off? I don't know. MULHOLLAND is a perfect Golden Globe movie, by the way, so that should help.
Other winners --
Brian Cox (L.I.E.) tied with Denzel Washington (TRAINING DAY) for Best Actor.
Ben Kingsley picked up a Best Supporting Actor award. Cameron Diaz, in a surprise, won the Best Supporting Actress prize for her spooked-out role in Cameron Crowe's VANILLA SKY. And finally...the award that is a no-brainer...Chris Nolan once again won the Best Screenplay award for his head-trip script MEMENTO.
So that's two Best Pictures for MULHOLLAND (one from Boston, one from New York) and two Best Director awards for Lynch (L.A. and Boston). Things, my friends, are looking good.
Is anyone else happy to see all the good, small films that came out this year get the praise and honor they deserve? MULHOLLAND is leading the pack, but SEXY BEAST, MEMENTO, IN THE BEDROOM -- and others -- have made a showing. Like I said before: I guess it takes a hideous year at the B.O. in Hollywood for people to see the quality that exists if they pull up the rug and do a little searching.
