Lynch Named Best Director for 'Mulholland'
December 16th, 2001
More good news for MULHOLLAND DR. The Los Angeles Film Critics Association flip-flopping the New York Critics awards named David Lynch best director of the year, and gave the best picture prize to IN THE BEDROOM.
I cannot tell you how it warms my heart and inspires my trust to see MULHOLLAND getting the recognition it deserves. Theres no guarantee itll make it with the Big Boys (Oscars) this is out-there, intense material but each one of these accolades is like a weapon in DR.s arsenal.
There were some other great picks by the L.A. critics
Chris Nolan rightly won the screenplay award for MEMENTO (if he doesnt win the Oscar there is no right and wrong).
Denzel Washington picked up the best actor award for the David Ayer-penned TRAINING DAY.
Kate Winslet took the best supporting actress honors for her role in IRIS.
SHREK won for animation.
The peerless cinematographer Roger Deakins won for his beautiful black-and-white noir work on THE MAN WHO WASNT THERE.
These picks are accurate and worthy. MULHOLLAND DR., THE MAN WHO WASNT THERE, MEMENTO the best films of the year all winners. Maybe it takes a lousy year, when the glossy Hollywood garbage has no luster, for the good, small films to burn bright.
