Butler's Script Sale of the Week...
May 13th, 2001
Well, as expected, not a very active week as producers are no doubt rummaging through the mountains of material they've purchased over the past few months to see if there's anything that's worth producing now that the strike is no longer a consideration. Still some promising stuff, nonetheless.
I'll be looking out for the Matthew McConaughey comedy DOG SHOW as I'm still waiting to see if Matty can ever top his brilliant comic turn in DAZED AND CONFUSED (1993). 1974 and THE PRIZEWINNER OF DEFIANCE, OHIO: HOW MY MOTHER RAISED 10 KIDS ON 25 WORDS OR LESS also sound interesting.
My pick this week is MURDER MYSTERIES the supernatural thriller that BLADE (1998) scribe David S. Goyer will be adapting form a Neil Gaiman short story for Dimension films.
MURDER MYSTERIES tells the story of the last days of Creation. As God finishes up his ultimate project, the Angel of Vengeance is forced to investigate a murder that has taken place among the angels, and ends up revealing the real reason for Lucifer's rebellion against the almighty.
The combination of Goyer and Gaiman should prove to be a successful one. Goyer started his career writing Jean Claude Van Damme movies (DEATH WARRANT, 1990 and KICKBOXER 2, 1991), but has in recent years become the scribe of choice for supernatural thrillers. DARK CITY (1998) was a great flick and BLADE (1998) released in the same year was a huge hit. Goyer has since written the BLADE sequel, due out this year, and has GHOST RIDER and his unsupernatural directorial debut ZIGZAG also in the pipeline. He's still an unproven talent as a director, but more than deserves a shot at helming MURDER MYSTERIES.
Gaiman, of course, is a comic book legend. His Sandman graphic novel series is not only critically acclaimed but highly successful as well. He's also an accomplished prose novelist as well. His first novel Neverwhere was a bestseller and is currently being made into a film by Jim Henson Pictures. MURDER MYSTERIES is one of his short stories included in the anthology Smoke and Mirrors: Short Fiction and Illusions and by all accounts is an exceptional piece of work.
This combination of "supernatural" talents has the potential of producing a classic of the genre. I can't wait to see how it turns out.
