Butler's Script Sale of the Week...

Not much action this week, but some interesting sales nonetheless. SOLACE sounds cool, as does THE DEAD CREW, the recently purchased pitch from the writers of PITCH BLACK, last year's sci-fi sleeper. OF GOD AND COUNTRY CLUB sounds interesting, too, especially if it reveals a side of the rap world that the public rarely sees.

I, however, must be true to my childhood and pick THE A-TEAM as my script sale of the week.

I could hear the opening bars of the theme song the moment I learned about this.

No, it wasn't great television drama, nor was it even great television action, or even comedy for that matter. But it was, for some unexplainable reason, simply great. (At least to a ten-year old kid). Each week I would wait in anticipation to be reunited with my pals Murdoch, Hannibal, Face, and B.A. on a new adventure. They never let me down.

Anyway, enough schmaltzy nostalgia. Fox 2000 has taken the challenge of updating this baby. How exactly will they do it? They've enlisted Kevin Brodbin to write the script. The only credit of Brodbin's that I could find was the god-awful THE GLIMMER MAN(1996). That's not necessarily a good sign, but maybe Brodbin can redeem himself here. Stephen J. Cannell, the producer and creator of the original "A-Team" is also on board, and I'm sure he'll do all he can to protect his baby.

I'm pretty sure they won't try to make it into a searing drama, and I'm hoping they don't try to spoof it. That worked with THE BRADY BUNCH MOVIE (1995), but I don't think it would work here. See, "The Brady Bunch" took itself seriously in it's previous incarnation, so it was ripe for spoofing. "The A- Team" never did.

They should go the LETHAL WEAPON (1987) route. Give us a good story, some great action, and some laughs. In fact, where the hell has Shane Black been lately? Why isn't he writing this?

Of course, a lot of this film's success would depend on the cast. Who the hell do you get to play Mr. T's role? So without further adieu, my dream cast for THE A-TEAM:

HANNIBAL: George Clooney
MURDOCH: Steve Buscemi
FACE: Mark Wahlberg
B.A.: Mr. T (that's right, bring him back baby, he's ripe for a comeback anyway)

Directed by: Steven Soderbergh (now THAT would be cool)

Who would you guys pick?

Here's to hoping this turns out to be the entertaining blockbuster that it's meant to be ...
