People's Pilot Winners Announced
January 8th, 2001
Los Angeles, Jan. 8, 2001
TV Writer.Com today announced the winners of the first People's Pilot Competition. "People are always complaining about the quality of shows on television, and now TV Writer.Com is doing something about it," said CEO Larry Brody. "The People's Pilot is a chance for outsiders to contribute to the medium they love by creating the kind of series they want to see, without worrying about the politics of television network and cable channel sales."
The 150 entrants in the Competition, held by the most visited and honored television writing site on the Web, each submitted presentations for series that were judged on the basis of creativity, originality, and salability. "Usually, it's the other way around, with the sales aspect first," Brody aid. "But we wanted to come up with ideas that would appeal to the audience, not just to he 'gatekeepers.'"
First Place went to Toni M. Eldridge for her one-hour dramatic series, "Family Portrait," about an African-American family's struggle to attain the American dream. Second Place went to Geraldine Vazquez for her half-hour sitcom, "All the Wrong Reasons," an edgy comedy about a love-hate relationship and divorce. Third Place was won by "Wolfpack Metro," a one-hour action drama about an elite K-9 Corps unit working the streets of L.A.
"I've been writing and producing television for 30 years," Brody, who has been writing supervisor/producer of the hit series "Spawn," "Mike Hammer," "The Fall Guy," "Police Story," and many others, "and now is the best time for new writers to get a series on the air. Increased competition between networks and cable channels, and the success of former outsiders such as Chris Carter has made TV buyers more open to proposals from unknowns. TV Writer.Com's job now is to get the winners to those buyers and to the audience that is eager for new concepts and new spin."
The prize for First Place is a development deal with Brody Productions, Inc, the parent company of TV Writer.Com, and packaging by the Shapiro-Lichtman Agency. Second and Third Place winners will be packaged by Shapiro-Lichtman.
TV Writer.Com is dedicated to improving TV by improving the quality of its writing, and can be found on the Web at http://www.tvwriter.com. ###
