Lao, Roy Iglesias and Lualhati Bautista reflect on the trials and joys of writing scripts for the Philippine movie industry

CALL it the writers LIB but the movement is no less than a league of Filipino award-winning screenwriters united to fight bad and mediocre movies, which could rightly mean an acronym for powerful storytelling Lao, Iglesias and Bautista.
Armando Bing Lao is a Banking and Finance graduate from University of the East. A Palanca award winner, his screenwriting credits include award-winning movies like Pila Balde, Sana Pag-ibig Na, Tuhog and La Vida Rosa among others. At present, Bing is writing a docudrama about married priests for Director Ellen Ongkeko for GMA 7. He also teaches basic and advanced scriptwriting for UP and the Mowelfund Film Institute.
Roy Iglesias is a Masscom graduate from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila with a masters degree from Ateneo de Manila. He began writing plays for Kalinangan ng Lahi, a coffee theatre in Cubao. He is best known for scripting Hubog, Yamashita: The Tigers Treasure and Eskapo, among others. Roy Iglesias is completing Mano Po 2 for Regal Films, Pilipinas for Viva Films and Feng Shui for Star Cinema. He also teaches Broadcast Journalism at St. Josephs College.
Lualhati Bautista, a Journalism drop-out from Lyceum of the Philippines, started her career dabbling in short stories during high school. She then acquired solid literary credentials when two short stories she wrote won Palanca awards. Her filmography includes Bata, Bata Paano Ka Ginawa?, Dekada 70, and Bulaklak ng City Jail. Lualhati is currently writing teleplays for Nagmamahal, Manay Gina and other drama anthologies for Channel 7.
