April 4th, 2003
Columbia Pictures has been busy. Recently they paid a low-six-figure advance to acquire the spec screenplay "Made of Honor" by first-time writer Adam Sztykiel. "Honor" is a male-driven romantic comedy about a guy whose dream girl asks him to be her maid of honor. He agrees in an attempt to win her heart.
Additioanlly, in a pre-emptive bid, Columbia Pictures has optioned Chris Van Allsburg's picture book "The Sweetest Fig." Mark Andrus ("As Good as It Gets") will adapt.
"Fig," published in 1993, is the story of a villainous dentist who is given a pair of magic figs by a patient who can't afford to pay cash. The figs have the power to make dreams come true, which he disbelieves but discovers to be true after eating the first one. He makes plans to eat the second fig to become the richest man in the world, but in a turn of events, his oppressed terrier Marcel gobbles it up and reverses the master-slave relationship. Van Allsburg's book "Jumanji" was released as a feature film by Columbia in 1995.
