Screenwriter/Director Billy Wilder Dead

The Associated Press just announced that Director Billy Wilder, whose films (SUNSET BOULEVARD, SOME LIKE IT HOT) are considered classics, died today at his home in Beverly Hills. Apparently of pneumonia. He was 95.

Wilder was a co-writer for virtually all of his films. Not only was he an exception director, but a great screenwriter as well. He was one of the first true Author-Auteurs. He became the first filmmaker to win three Academy Awards in a year -- the film was THE APARTMENT, which won for best director, best screenplay and best picture. He also produced many of his own films as well.

He received 20 Academy Award nominations and won six Oscars during his career.
