Phil K. Dicks SCANNER picked up by Soderbergh/Clooney
February 13th, 2002
The Steven Soderbergh/George Clooney shingle Section 8 has paid two hundred thousand dollars to option the Philip K. Dick novel A SCANNER DARKLY. (If the movie is made -- which seems to be difficult, if you know its history with Hollywood -- the deal could be worth as much as two million dollars.)
This tale of drug addiction finds an undercover cop so brain-fried that he is investigating himself.
The book has been in development before. Most notably with Terry Gilliam. (I think hes the man for the job, in my opinion.)
Back before he became the experimental king of screenwriting, Charlie Kaufman took a whack at the adaptation, and his frustrations with it color the character of Donald Kaufman in his script ADAPTATION.
