WGA Nominations Are In...
February 8th, 2002
Yesterday, as the pressure mounts in Hollywood in anticipation of next Tuesday's (Feb. 12) Oscar nominations, the WGA named its nominees for this years 54th Annual Writers Guild Awards. (For those of you who are curious, the WGA has an 80 percent success rate at picking Oscar winners, and its choices do often influence voters.)
WGA nominees were picked from among 187 movies this year, 111 in the original category and 76 in the adapted screenplay group. Winners will be named in a ceremony taking place simultaneously in New York and Los Angeles on March 2.
The WGA nominees for best original screenplay are:
Julian Fellowes, GOSFORD PARK
Joel and Ethan Coen, THE MAN WHO WASN'T THERE
Milo Addica and Will Rokos, MONSTER BALL
Baz Luhrmann and Craig Pearce, MOULIN ROUGE
Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson, THE ROYAL TENNENBAUMS
Where's David Lynch (MULHOLLAND DR.)? Another script we recognized here on SU that is still being ignored, David Ayers TRAINING DAY. But as it is, this is a tough group with any of the five nominees a strong option for the award. I'll go with Milo Addica and Will Rokos for their edgy and dark drama, MONSTER BALL
The nominees for best adapted screenplay are:
Akiva Goldsman, A BEAUTIFUL MIND
Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and Peter Jackson, THE LORD OF THE RINGS
Ken Nolan, BLACK HAWK DOWN
Daniel Clowes and Terry Zwigoff, GHOST WORLD
Helen Fielding, Andrew Davies and Richard Curtis, BRIDGET JONES' DIARY
SHREK by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio would have beem an appropriate nomination, another screenplay not getting the recognition it deserves. It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if THE LORD OF THE RINGS won this. But hopefully it won't, and that's not meant as a knock on that fine film. The right choice here is Akiva Goldsman, A BEAUTIFUL MIND.
The Coen brothers and Curtis have been Writers Guild (WGA) winners before. The Coens for FARGO in 1996 and Curtis for FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL in 1994.
Missing were Oscar favorites, IN THE BEDROOM and MEMENTO, which were deemed ineligible for this year's Writers Guild awards because the movies were not "WGA signatory" productions.
