Ah-nolds DAMAGE is number one/won at the B.O.
February 11th, 2002
What I feared would happen has: COLLATERAL DAMAGE, though not intentionally, has capitalized on the 9/11 tragedy. Had DAMAGE come out when it was supposed to, months ago, it would have been seen by few and possibly considered the nail in the coffin of Schwarzeneggers career.
Ah-nold, with his inflated biceps and heavy accent and kill-kill-kill brainless movies, is a relic. People are sick of he-men, and even if they do embrace one, he has to have style and a heavy dash of something current: like Vin Diesel.
DAMAGE was protested by Colombians who thought the film unfairly portrayed them (probably true) and was questioned by some, thanks to its plot, if it should be released at all.
The press coverage was intense. Arnold, with that big phony grin of his, stood at the mikes and said, (The firefighters) are my heroes; I based my character on these guys.
Right, Arnie. Your character is just like a firefighter: they always hunt down the people whove murdered their family in the jungle of Colombia.
In the brainless 80s-ish action film ideal, doing what Arnie does makes you a hero. But the real firefighters showed us the definition of a hero. Guys, most not even on duty, rushing into a collapsing building to save strangers. Does A.S. not get this?
COLLATERAL DAMAGE is a brain-busting formulaic film that is essentially COMMANDO II. With Arnie, and his easy answers, killing everyone and letting God sort them out.
The scariest thing is that this might have revived, just a bit, Arnies gasping career.
