Script Report: SPEED RACER
October 18th, 2001
In a deal rumored to be worth $1.2 million, Warner Bros. Pictures has entered into an agreement with Christian Gudegast and Paul Scheuring to write a new script for SPEED RACER. This marks more than a decade that the classic animated series has spent in development at the studio.
The story is based on the 1960s animated series from Tatsuo Yoshida about a race car driver who is haunted by a mysterious Racer X who may have killed his brother.
There have been at least nine scribes who have hacked away at the adaptation. Among them Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett (MADELINE) Jeffrey Abrams (JOY RIDE) and Patrick Read Johnson (DRAGONHEART), the others include: Jeff Vintar, Mark Levin, J. F. Lawton, Paul T. Scheuring, John Lau, and Christian Gudegast.
Directors who have been attached to the project over the years include Julien Temple, Gus Van Sant and Alfonso Cuaron.
