Strike Update: Comic Books Anyone?
April 17th, 2001
Let's face it, not all professional writers are going to be hurting much when the strike hits, or anytime soon after. First, its been crazy since after the holidays in terms of sales, and more especially, assignments. A lot of professional writers have been banking several hundred grand to doctor scripts.
There will yet be another option: comic books. According to an article I read in today's USA Today, Marvel Comics, which has such well-known comic characters as X-MEN AND SPIDER-MAN, has been recruiting some of Hollywood's top screenwriters.
"It would free up a bunch of very talented writers," says Joe Quesada, editor in chief of Marvel Comics told USA Today. "One would hope that if there were a strike, any Hollywood writers who have roots in comic books might think it would be fun."
Writers/filmmakers rumored to be on Quesada's hit list include: John Singleton (BOYZ IN THE HOOD); M. Night Shyamalan (THE SIXTH SENSE); Kevin Smith, who is now doing a series of 12 comic books on the superhero Green Arrow for DC Comics; J. Michael Straczynski, creator of the TV series Babylon 5; Joss Whedon, executive producer of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is working on Fray, a sci-fi vampire hunter tale, for Dark Horse Comics.
I'm beginning to feel less sympathetic, and a little fucking jealous.
