Script Report: ENDURANCE

It is being reported that Oscar winning screenwriter Steven Zaillian (SCHINDLER'S LIST) has inked a deal for an undisclosed amount, to do a rewrite on ENDURANCE, a film about Ernest Shackleton's disastrous mission to the South Pole. Last year at the Telluride Film Festival I had the chance to see the Documentary THE ENDURANCE, and it was apparent to me then that this story would make for a good movie IF it is done well. The project has languished a bit, but with Zaillian coming on board it is assumed that the picture is heading for a greenlight. A recent draft by Dan Gilroy (DREADNAUGHT), was said to be pretty good, and now Zaillian is coming in to do just a character polish. The script has already received rewrites from Jeff Maguire, David Field, Ron Bass and `PERFECT STORM scribe Bill Witliff. Wolfgang Petersen (THE PERFECT STORM) will both direct and produce, along with National Geographic Films' nascent production shingle. Petersen is a great choice.

The film centers on Shackleton's 1915 expedition to Antarctica that met with near disaster. After surviving their ship being crushed by ice, the whole band was nearly killed trying to get home in the harshest weather found on the planet.

Zaillian most recently worked on Miramax's THE GANGS OF NEW YORK, and the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced action film BLACK HAWK DOWN.
