Joe Eszterhas Packs up and Leaves Town...
April 5th, 2001
BASIC INSTINCT, for my money, is one of the most fluidly written screenplays I've ever had the pleasure to absorb. It flowed, like good music or a fine wine. It was an effortless read, and a fine story. The much maligned Hollywood screenwriter of BASIC INSTINCT, dare I say, legendary, Joe Eszterhas has reportedly packed up and left town (Hollywood), back to Cleveland -- where he is from.
After several recent flops, and outright Hollywood wars with agents and producers, Eszterhas has apparently had his fill of Bollywood.
From today's Variety:
"It is not known whether he will continue writing movies or will focus entirely on what he would like to make his new career -- writing books.
After last year's successful book, 'American Rhapsody,' the burly former Rolling Stone journalist signed a two-book deal. One book reportedly will be a nonfiction look at the Hollywood establishment, the other a thriller."
Hopefully, the screenwriting world does hear from him again.
