Writer/Director Wallace Starts Writer-Friendly Production Company...

Randall Wallace, who is preparing to direct Mel Gibson in the Paramount/Icon Vietnam saga WE WE'RE SOLDIERS ONCE... AND YOUNG made an important announcement early this week. He is reportedly starting a "writer-friendly shingle," called The Wheelhouse. Stephen Zapotoczny and Danielle Lemmon are vice presidents of production and development.

The company's mission is to find new writers and develop their projects.

Strangely Wheelhouse's first project is an early Wallace script, LOVE AND HONOR, dealing with an 18th century American who heads to Russia (during the time Catherine the Great was in power) to enlists her support for the American Revolution. Largo had the rights to the script years ago, but it went south after they tried to turn the film into an Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle. Which is unbelievable.

According to Wallace, "the real foundation of a memorable movie is a script that not only has the writer's passion, but total commitment," Wallace told Variety. "I saw an opportunity to build a business devoted to creating scripts that have the absolute commitment of the writer. I'm able to finance development myself, and we're very quietly recruiting writers we believe in. This requires a commitment, because we won't pay them salaries. But if we go out and sell the thing, they get 100% of the money."
