Sundance Screenwriting Awards Handed Out...
January 26th, 2001
On Thursday the Sundance Institute and Japanese broadcaster NHK awarded four lucky writers from around the world $10,000 and the promise of more money and mentoring to develop their scripts into feature films.
Winners of the Sundance Institute/NHK International Filmmakers Award, handed out each year since 1996, come from four regions: the United States, Japan, Latin America and Europe.
"It's one of the few awards that goes beyond just a cash prize," Michelle Satter who, with Susan Morris of the Sundance Institute, oversees the awards, said at the ceremony.
This year's winners were U.S. nominee Michael Burke for a screenplay called THE MUDGE BOY, Argentina's Daniel Burman for EVERY STEWARDESS GOES TO HEAVEN, the Netherlands' Fatima Jebli-Quazzani for HALIMA'S PARADISE and Japan's Hidenori Sugimori for WOMAN OF WATER.
