A Banner Year At The Box Office? And a Quick Week In Review...
January 2nd, 2001
The receipts are in and last year's take for Hollywood was over $7.45 billion -- up 2% from $7.31 billion in 1999.
Disney remains at top in annual market share, its third consecutive win and seventh in the past 11 years. (The studio was runner-up in the four years it didn't win.)
In my opinion Universal-DreamWorks not only had the best year in its history, but released some of the best films including, GLADIATOR, CHICKEN RUN and WHAT LIES BENEATH. If you add to it 1999's AMERICAN BEAUTY, the studio is on a serious good luck streak.
So, was it the banner year these numbers would indicate? No, it wasn't. The industry's difficult summer -- which dipped 5% from '99 in the first year-to-year drop since 1992 -- have kept the mood somber. The year-to-year gain in 2000 was the smallest since 1995.
More people are going to the movies, but that does not mean they are getting quality. I'm also convinced that from the looks of the movies coming out this year, the year-to-year gain will shrink even more in my opinion. There are a few films that will do well like PEARL HARBOR, THE GIFT, TRAFFIC (A limited release last week for 2000 Oscar consideration), HANNIBAL, ANTITRUST, THE HEIST, BLOW, and FINDING FORRESTER. That's about it for the first 6 months as far as I am concerned.
Anyway, if I have missed an upcoming film you've heard about that will be good, let me know.
BOX OFFICE
CAST AWAY
Two weeks and $100 million later, Tom Hanks flexes his Box Office muscles. The critics say, "Hanks shines in otherwise dim film."
WHAT WOMEN WANT
Really an average film, but good enough. Mel Gibson hangs on to the number two slot.
MISS CONGENIALITY
My wife liked it, enough said. Yuck!
THE FAMILY MAN
The ultimate performer Nic Cage is back. Actually, I'm not going to rip the man. This wasn't that bad of a movie, though Entertainment Weekly thought it was, "...[a] schlock weeper..." Ouch!
THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE
Fun for the whole family.
THE GRINCH
What more can we say, it's Carrey-if-ic!
The rest: VERTICAL LIMIT, WES CRAVEN'S DRACULA 2000, DUDE WHERE'S MY CAR?, and CROUCHING TIGER,HIDDEN DRAGON
