Ted Tally Talks RED DRAGON...
December 12th, 2000
Even before February's release of HANNIBAL (sequel to SILENCE OF THE LAMBS) a third film about Doctor Hannibal Lector is being planned by Universal Pictures.
What gives the project legitimacy is that screenwriter Ted Tally, who won an Academy Award for his script SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, has agreed to write what looks to be a third Hannibal film. It will be based on Thomas Harris' novel "Red Dragon," which was previously adapted as the feature film MANHUNTER in 1986.
"People had mixed feelings about that movie," Tally told Jam Showbiz this past Sunday. "It doesn't even have the (book's) title on it, it was not a success at the box office, it didn't have Tony Hopkins in it and it wasn't following the success of Silence Of The Lambs."
He continues, "What's really wonderful about that book is the feeling of the desperately hurt, spiritually, emotionally, deeply hurt man having to pull himself together one last time to go battle the demons, even though it almost killed him before and may kill him this time."
Tally appears to be confident enough in the material that he predicted that a good script will persuade Hopkins to take on the role one more time.
Good luck Ted, I hope you're right.
