Script Report: LOST PATROL
December 8th, 2000
Variety is reporting today that Randall Wallace, writer of BRAVEHEART, and the upcoming PEARL HARBOR movie, appears close to a deal that would reunite him with BRAVEHEART star and director Mel Gibson.
Gibson is reportedly in final talks to star as the battalion commander of a true Vietnam war story, with Wallace directing a script he wrote.
The working title appears to be LOST PATROL. The story will deal with 400 US soldiers who parachuted into enemy territory in the Ia Drang Valley only to be surrounded by 2,000 enemy troops. It was the first Vietnam battle between US and Viet Cong forces, and took place in 1965. The battle lasted over a month. The story is based on a book Wallace owns the film rights to, "We Were Soldiers Once ... and Young," by Harold Moore, who was commander of the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry. Joseph Galloway, a reporter, was also on the scene for the bloody battle.
