Script Report: INTOLERABLE CRUELTY
October 24th, 2000
Jonathan Demme is in need of a serious rebound. His last effort was the Oprah Winfrey starrer BELOVED, which was a major flop. Variety is reporting that the director is in negotiations to helm a dark romantic comedy called INTOLERABLE CRUELTY, formally known as DIVORCE LAWYER. A deal is rumored to be already done.
Furthermore, Demme is reportedly courting Hugh Grant, Tea Leoni and Geoffrey Wright to star with a March, 2001 start date.
The story is based on an idea by John Romano, and Andrew Bergman was at one time attached to direct. There have been a ton of writers who have spilt ink over this project including: Ethan and Joel Coen, Jake Hogan, Matthew Stone, Barbara Benedek, Jay Kogen, and Robert Ramsey. The original writers are Robert Ramsey and Matthew Stone (LIFE). The Coen brothers are the most recent scribes to get a stab at the script.
Story line centers on a hotshot attorney, who framed a client's wife to get his client out of a marriage settlement, is pursued by the revenge seeking wife who's plan is to marry and take him for all he's worth. It's unclear whether Grant will play the lawyer. Leoni looms likely as his wife.
