Columbia Pictures have acquired the sci-fi action pitch UNDERGROUND from Darren Lemke (PARADISE FALLS, 1999). Don Murphy's Angry Films will produce.
Fine Line Features has optioned the rights to the popular UK comic book, OUTLAW. Llyod Foneville will script and Andrew Upton will direct.
New Line Cinema and Revolution have picked up an untitled comedy from Paul Thomas Anderson (MAGNOLIA, 1999) which the wunderkind will most certainly direct. Adam Sandler is set to star.
Universal plans to adapt RED DRAGON, the first novel by Thomas Harris to feature the infamous Hannibal Lecter. Ted Tally the screenwriter of SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (1991) has been hired to
write the script. Anthony Hopkins has expressed interest in starring in what would be a prequel to SILENCE. In fact, this film could actually be considered a remake of Michael Mann's MANHUNTER (1986) which was also an adaptation of RED DRAGON.
Comedians Jimmy Kimmel and Adam Carolla, hosts of TV's "The Man Show" will develop and write an untitled comedy for Ivan Reitman's Montecito production company. Reitman may possibly direct and Kimmel and Carolla are expected to star.
Todd Phillips and Scot Armstrong (ROAD TRIP, 2000) have been enlisted by Dreamworks to write the comedy OLD SCHOOL, which Phillips, who directed ROAD TRIP, will also direct and produce (he'll be paid $3 million for his trouble). Ivan Reitman will also produce and shooting is expected to commence in North Carolina in March 2001.
Paramount had acquired the thriller pitch 59 STORY CRISIS from writer Jason Rothberg (THE SPARROW, 2000). The idea is based on a New Yorker article by Joe Morgenstern. From the sounds of it, it looks like it could be a modern-day TOWERING INFERNO (1974) which is fine with me given they can find a modern-day Steve McQueen and Paul Newman ...
The Walt Disney Co. has purchased an untitled action comedy script from SNL writer Matt Piedmont as a starring vehicle for SNL star Will Ferrell. Robert Simonds will produce.
Miramax has acquired THE CONFESSIONS OF WILLIAM HENRY IRELAND written by Neil Gaiman (NEVERWHERE, 2001). Gaiman will also handle directing chores on this true story inspired flick.
Wes Craven Films has enlisted Donald Martin (BUTTERSCOTCH, 2000, TV) to adapt the non-fiction novel THE DAY I WENT MISSING by Jennifer Miller. Craven himself will produce this one.
