A Good Story Anyone?

September, early Fall, is usually a slow time of year at the box office... at least that's what you would be told if you were to ask ACNielsen EDI president Tom Borys. But the fact is, it's only down when there is nothing compelling enough to rip people away from those Friday evening high-school, Saturday and Sunday afternoon, football games. It's hard enough for my wife to drag me away from the TV to dinner, let alone a damn movie... and I run screenwriting and movie web sites.

This weekend THE WATCHER and NURSE BETTY finished one and two respectively with sudio-estimated openings of $9.1 and $7.3 (million). In comparing year-to-year, it marked the seventh straight weekend of decline.

In 1999 there was an exception, well that's what we're told, when September and early Fall generated some good numbers. Why? Let's take a look: THE SIXTH SENSE ($16.5) was still going strong, and the debut of the highly underrated and enjoyable STIGMATA which won out the weekend with $18.3 million.

It all comes down to good stories, and right now there is nothing but crap to see: THE CELL, WHAT LIES BENEATH, BRING IT ON, SPACE COWBOYS, ugh.

Sorry, I'll take the football game.

Think I'm full of it? Let me know
