Top Road Movies

Road trip type movies are as American as, well, apple pie. America has always been known for its wide open spaces and the highways that crisscross the nation connecting all these places together. As a true "car culture" Americans have always had a love affair with their vehicles, and so its should reason why we would love movies that offer great characters on the road.

Here's out list of the Top 10 "Road Movies" (note any movie that involves a highway or interstate is considered a "road movie."):

  1. Thelma and Louise (1991): Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis  shoot a rapist and take off in a '66 Thunderbird.
  2. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (1987):  Steve Martin meets John Candy while struggling to travel home for Thanksgiving.
  3. Easy Rider (1969): Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, and Jack Nicholson in a classic search for America on motorcycle.
  4. Smokey and the Bandit (1977): A cross-country car and truck chase with Burt Reynolds, Jerry Reed, Sally Field, and Jackie Gleason.
  5. Duel (1971): TV movie by Steven Spielberg where a business commuter is pursued and terrorized by a malevolent driver of a massive tractor-trailer.
  6. Electra Glide in Blue (1973): William Blake as a highway cop who gets his wish and is promoted to Homicide following the mysterious murder of a hermit. 
  7. The Grapes of Wrath (1940): The Joad family, including son Henry Fonda, heads for California on Route 66 in this classic film version of John Steinbeck's classic novel.
  8. National Lampoon's Vacation (1983): Chevy Chase and family hit the highways bound for Wally World.
  9. Speed (1994): Keanu Reeves, Dennis Hopper, and Sandra Bullock demonstrate the perils of mass transit.
  10. The Wild One (1954): Marlon Brando and his motorcycle pals terrorize a small town.
